Ministry of Environment Declares Environmental Emergency in Coatepeque Lake.

A few weeks ago, the watercolor of that lake began to change due to the proliferation of cyanobacteria. The Ministry of Environment reported that it declares a state of "environmental emergency" in Coatepeque Lake, in Santa Ana, for 12 months due to the natural disaster in the Coatepeque Lake basin of 68.69 km2 and the risks it represents for the affluent and the citizens.

Through a message on X (Twitter), Environment informed that the minister of that State portfolio, Fernando López, offered a press conference on Monday, April 8, to provide more details. A few weeks ago, the watercolor of that lake began to change due to the proliferation of cyanobacteria. In view of this, the Environment explained that this phenomenon is attributed to a combination of factors, including high temperatures and intense solar radiation, which create a conducive environment for the proliferation of cyanobacteria. Additionally, the presence of nutrients in the water further contributes to their uncontrolled growth, which has led to abnormal pigmentation in the lake, which now shows dark brown and green tones.

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are photosynthetic microorganisms that can be found in freshwater bodies such as lakes and ponds. According to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when these cyanobacteria die and decompose, they release dangerous toxins that can affect both humans and aquatic animals.

Exposure to toxins released by decomposing cyanobacteria can have various negative health consequences, including skin, eye, and throat irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headaches, and, in severe cases, liver or neurological damage. According to the CDC, inhalation or ingestion of these toxins can even cause chronic respiratory and neurological problems in the long term.
